Ah, I was just dropping off to sleep . . . —⁠no, I wanted to think some more about this small idea that gets bigger; I don’t entirely grasp the progression; now it’s huge, the idea —⁠and it’s taken hold of me —⁠to live off of me, yes, I am its means of existence; it’s heavy—I have to present it, represent it to the world.—It has taken hold of me so that I’ll haul it around to everyone.—It weighs upon me as heavily as God Himself . . . Damnation! another phrase!” I took out another sheet of paper; I lit my candle; I wrote:

It must increase, but I must decrease.
